Opinion: Black and Jewish leaders unite against rising antisemitism, racism

In a San Diego Union-Tribune opinion piece, ADL Regional Director Fabienne Perlov and Urban League of San Diego County President and CEO Al Abdallah unite to sound the alarm on rising antisemitism and racism, citing 2024 FBI data and troubling local incidents. The authors highlight collaborative efforts between ADL and the Urban League, including the Community Safety and Solidarity Coalition and a joint Black-Jewish Seder, while commending the San Diego City Council for adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's working definition of antisemitism. They close with a call to action for schools, faith leaders, businesses and community members to stand together, affirming that true safety requires solidarity across all communities.

ADL San Diego and the Urban League of San Diego County co-hosted a historic Together Towards Freedom: Black Jewish Passover Seder, bringing together 90 clergy members, elected officials, community leaders and young professionals. Led by Rabbi Jason Nevarez, participants explored Passover traditions, shared their experiences confronting antisemitism and racism, and found common ground in their commitment to the ongoing work of building a more just and inclusive San Diego. The evening ended as it began: in unity, with arms linked and voices raised together. This is what solidarity looks like.
